When it comes to ADA, I run across a lot of examples where well-meaning people just got it wrong. Their attempt to make something accessible turned into anything BUT accessible! All the more reason to make sure you do it right the first time. Here are some examples … so make sure you Do THIS … NOT that!
Truncated domes … the yellow bumpy things everyone hates are required to b the full width of the ramp, 3 feet deep in the direction of travel placed at the bottom of the curb ramp.
Curb ramps are not allowed in an access aisle … AND this ramp was painted and very slippery!
Yep, in place of truncated domes, the walkway was painted yellow and rocks were glued down on the surface.
This is supposed to be the accessible path-of-travel, but it doesn’t work because a wheelchair user can’t get between the light pole and the planter curbs.
Do not place shopping carts or dumpsters in the diagonally striped area which is known as the “Access Aisle” for an accessible parking spot.
Accessible parking spaces are for the disabled …. not the postal carrier.
These truncated domes are required to be the width of the porte-cochere.
Stamped concrete is not allowed in place of truncated domes.
